Today’s Tech Shots on May 1, 2008

Today we have a couple of tech blogshots. The first is a clip about the TSA pushing forward with the latest technology in airport security. The second snip today is regarding one of the grand daddy companies of technology, Xerox. TSA Upping Security

The head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced plans to roll out advanced passenger screening and baggage scanning devices at airports across the United States.

Testifying on 15 April 2008 before a US House of Representatives transport security subcommittee, TSA Administrator Kip Hawley said that whole-body imaging portals employing millimetre-wave (MMW) technology will be deployed at two major international hubs.

Xerox Looking to Raise Public Perception and Portfolio

During a discussion with Xerox CTO Sophie Vanderbroek, Forrester Research VP Laura Ramos observed that Xerox was well-known as an inventor but that other companies seemed to commercialize its technology. (Like the publishing companies that passed on the original Harry Potter manuscript, everyone at Xerox is probably tired of being reminded how Apple and others took its ideas to market.)

Xerox, as a company with $17 billion in revenue in 2007, hardly has to apologize for itself, but after years of lackluster stock performance, there’s a sense that the company needs to clarify its positioning, particularly as Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN), Google (NSDQ: GOOG), Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), and Salesforce.com, among others, redefine software as a service and IT infrastructure as a platform.

Ramos and other Forrester analysts at the event pressed Vanderbroek to clarify Xerox’s vision and identity. “They do have something to demonstrate to the market,” said Ramos in a phone interview. “What does this innovation mean in terms of building shareholder value at Xerox?”
